Community ParntersCommunity Parnters
Dr. Shum and the team at Wholistic Health Collaborative live out the name of the business in many forms. One way is in our collaborative community-participatory partnerships. Dr. Shum’s training in Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) informs the value for community partnerships: shared voices, shared goals, community stakeholder involvement (i.e., people with various forms of psychological distress and recovery, as well as organizations that serve the community), strengths-based approaches, and shared power. To this end, community partnerships can involve Dr. Shum offering a service (e.g., training workshops, teaching, supervision, or other identified needs), or program development and evaluation. Currently, there are set fees for supervision of therapist trainees, and presentations; but costs vary depending on the shared growth, and goals that often arise with community partnerships.
Fetal Alcohol Spectrum DisordersFetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders

Fetal alcohol Syndrome (FASD) is a leading cause of neurodevelopmental disorders and is more common in children in foster care than in the general population. Estimates suggest that 30-50% of children entering foster care have been prenatally exposed to alcohol, and 70% of children diagnosed with FASD have been in foster care. FASD is also common in international adoptions.
One main reason Dr. Shum and her team have initiated a community needs assessment of the Inland Empire treatment options is that the parents raising children with FASD are not finding informed treatment providers in our local area. Some have resorted to treatment through the Violence Intervention Program in Los Angeles. But the needs are great, and as of now, it’s hard to find services. If you or someone you know is raising a child with fetal alcohol exposure or suspected fetal alcohol exposure, email Dr. Shum at [email protected] to schedule a 30-minute interview.
Healthy RCHealthy RC
Healthy RC has been a successful city-community partnership since 2008, receiving national recognition for its work to improve community health. Their vision is to create a community where people of all generations lead vibrant, healthy, and happy lives. To achieve this, the Healthy RC partnership brings together residents, community organizations, and public and private entities, all working collaboratively to enhance the well-being of Rancho Cucamonga. We currently partner with Healthy RC in assisting with the Veteran Rally Point Meetings at Chaffey college’s Veteran Resource Center and collaborate on community initiatives related to reducing mental health stigma. In 2023-2024, we aim to work with graduates of CSUSB to reduce men’s mental health stigma. Dr.Shum and the Wholistic Health Collaborative are very appreciative of the work we do with Healthy RC and are grateful for the partnership we have with them.

Soulwell Family Guidance CenterSoulwell Family Guidance Center

Dr. Shum, Dr. Pelayo and clinicians at the Soulwell group collaborate as a treatment team to provide the best clinical support for our clients through psychological treatment and evaluations. In 2022, under the supervision of Dr. Shum, Dr. Juhee Song of the Soulwell group co-facilitated grief groups with Maya Gwynn of 3 Lines Collective to serve the Ontario Transitional-Aged Youth.
Soulwell Family Guidance Group was formed under the direction of Dr. Stephanie Pelayo who after years in solo private practice, recognized the need for a community of clinicians who are invested in the cultivation of their trade for the benefit and care for the whole family. Soulwell emerged during a season of surrender, to create an atmosphere of deep engagement and pursues personal depth. Through their therapeutic interactions, they seek to deepen the understanding of ourselves, and mold our souls to grow in wisdom and despite suffering, hope.
Their group is also the outpouring of our community in service to others not just locally but globally by dedicating a portion of our proceeds towards the restoration of victims of trauma.
