The PracticeThe Practice
Wholistic Health Collaborative has been developed based on the journey I’ve taken with my own chronic health conditions and how I’ve learned through research that an integrated health approach results in the best outcomes for my clients. There are two principles married in the name: Wholistic Health and Collaborative. Wholistic Health reflects how I approach my clients’ health concerns; by integrating biological (nutrition, hydration, exercise, medical conditions, and hormone imbalances), psycho-social (your unique presentation of symptoms and how they are influenced by your thoughts, behaviors, emotions, and quality of social support), as well as your spiritual/ philosophical values. Collaborative is how I function as a psychologist, but also how I expect our team of interdisciplinary practitioners at WHC to work together for the client’s health outcomes. I collaborate with parents/ family members/ partners, teachers, and a variety of practitioners that my clients are working with for their health goals.

Dr. Shum and research assistants are working with community partners to conduct a community needs assessment of treatment options for children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder. The team is listening to parents and providers in the local Inland Empire area through qualitative interviews. These interviews are being assessed through thematic analysis, and will be shared with key stakeholders in the community. If you are a parent or treatment provider serving children with diagnosed or suspected fetal alcohol exposure, then complete our study registration and Imelda Saucedo, Research Coordinator, will schedule an interview time with you. We value your input and seek to work together for the good of some of our most vulnerable children.

High School InternshipsHigh School Internships
Dr. Shum has enjoyed mentoring students from different phases in their career development. She recently started a high school internship program, and hopes to maintain a group of high school interns who can serve their peers through community outreach activities and peer support groups. One way that Jessica is serving the community, is through community awareness at the local high school mental health fairs with HealthyRC staff. Over the summer, Lydia assisted with a research article co-authored by Dr. Shum and research team members.
